## Twenty to sixty-nine

The tens are **vingt** (20), **trente** (30), **quarante** (40), **cinquante**
(50) and **soixante** (60). Put the unit after the tens: *vingt-deux* is 22,
*trente-huit* is 38 and *cinquante-neuf* is 59. Numbers ending in one take
*et un*: *vingt et un*, *trente et un* through *soixante et un*.

## Seventy, eighty and ninety

- 70: **soixante-dix** — 60 + 10
- 71: **soixante et onze** — 60 + 11
- 80: **quatre-vingts** — four twenties
- 81: **quatre-vingt-un** — no *et* and no final *s*
- 90: **quatre-vingt-dix** — 80 + 10
- 95: **quatre-vingt-quinze** — 80 + 15
- 100: **cent**

The final *s* in *quatre-vingts* belongs only to exactly 80. It disappears when
another number follows.

## Numbers in real French

*Ça coûte douze euros* means “It costs twelve euros.” *J’ai trente-deux ans*
means “I am thirty-two”—French says “I have thirty-two years.” French phone
numbers are often read in five groups of two digits.

**How do you count from 1 to 10 in French?**

**Why is 80 quatre-vingts?**
It literally means four twenties: 4 × 20 = 80.

**How do you say 70 and 90?**
Seventy is soixante-dix; ninety is quatre-vingt-dix.

**Does every number ending in one use et?**
No. 81 and 91 are quatre-vingt-un and quatre-vingt-onze, without et.
