## The three you will actually use

- **merci** — what you say to the baker, the bus driver, the waiter. Never wrong.
- **merci beaucoup** — for a real favour.
- **je vous remercie** — formal (interviews, officials, anyone you address as *vous*);

Caution: said with a flat tone, **merci bien** can sound ironic, like "thanks a lot" in
English. When it matters, say **merci beaucoup** — it is never ambiguous.

## Merci pour or merci de?

- Thanking for a **thing** → **merci pour**: *merci pour le café* (thanks for the coffee).
- Thanking for **doing something** → **merci de** + verb: *merci d'être venu* (thank you for
